Public Service Broadcasting


  • PSB means that programmes are made for the public. there are no advertisements.
  • Public service broadcasters generally transmit programming that aims to improve society by informing viewers.
  • Public service broadcasters also strive to entertain their viewers.
  • The BBC is an example of a public service broadcaster.
  • A Remit is the responsibility of a programme.
  • The BBC's remit is to enrich peoples lives with programmes and services that inform, educate and entertain.
  • 'To reflect the UK, it's culture and values to the world'.
Funding

  • 75% of the BBC's funding comes from the licence fee (currently costs £147 for a colour and £49.50 for a black and white TV licence.
  • The remaining income comes from commercial activities such as: Worldwide sales of its programmes and publication such as radio times, good food, etc. 
Structure of the BBC

  • The BBC is a cross - media organisation - one of the largest in Europe.
  • This means it is vertically and horizontally integrated. 

Vertical and Horizontal Integration

Vertical Integration

In which a media company has the ability to control the production, distribution and exchange (consumption) of a product.

Horizontal Integration

In which a media company has a number of subsidiary companies that are used to support the marketing of its products.

BBC Case study: 'Doctor Who'

Doctor who uses horizontal integration. Their online website features horizontal integration because they are promoting other programmes. 

Synergy - When companies that are both vertically and horizontally integrated are able to create synergy across their output. Using other companies to help promote the programme.

Doctor Who can be advertised across a range of different media via horizontal integration. It can be advertised:
 - Online and through social media services such as through the BBC website and Twitter. 
- It can be advertised through print media and print advertising for example through the Radio Times magazine publication.
-  It can be advertised on TV channels for example the show can be advertised across different channels such as BBC 1, BBC 2, BBC 3 and BBC 4. 
- As well as this it can be advertised through merchandising, for example a range of doctor who merchandise is available buy.

Time- shifting

When something is broadcast and then sorted to be viewed at a later time. It is from a parent company. Relevant to not just TV but radio too.
