Textual analysis question prep

Analyse how mis-en-scene events contributed towards the construction of stereotypes in a media product you have studied. Stereo types Gang culture - Negative representation - this conforms to the stereotype - What are they? Location/setting - Bathroom - stereotype to where fights happen Old vs young - binary opposition (Levi Strauss) - old are stereotypically weak incapable fragile - young are strong, quick, agile. This is challenging the stereotype because the old people are quick, strong and able to fight. Girls cant fight - all male in the fight - stereotype women can't fight, aren't strong. Asian good at fighting - asian guy loses fight - goes against stereo type.

15 mark question

Analyse how mise-en-scene elements contributed to the construction of stereotypes in media product you have studied’ 15 marks. Give yourselves 20 minutes to answer this question. One mise-en-scene element that contributes towards the construction of stereotypes is the setting of the Worlds end during the fighting scene between the 6 aliens and the 6 humans. This setting contributed to the good vs bad stereotype which was prominent throughout the scene. This is because the 6 humans were made to look good when we witness one of the clients attempt to murder one of the human characters at the start of the scene, which started the scene off. This already portrayed to the audience that this was going to be a good vs bad fighting scene, a typical stereo type in many films.

Legal and Ethical Issues

Hypodermic Needle Theory Theorises that audiences are essentially passive, and will absorb messages relayed to them by the media. This means that, after watching a violent horror film, or plying a violent POV shooter, audience members will be negatively influenced. This presupposes that audiences are passive (unable to reject media messages) rather then active (they make sense if media messages through personal and social contexts). Moral Panic and Folk Devils In 1972, Stanley Cohen developed the moral panic theory. This encompassed ideas of folk devils in society. Moral panic happens when 'a condition, episode, person or group of persons emerges to become defined as a threat to societal values and interests'. His research was based on the mods and rockers in the 1960s, but have since been applied to the media. The Stages of Moral Panic Someone, something or a group are defined as a threat to social norms or community interests The threat is the...
